Even a relatively small payout wasn't going to look good to the regents who are clearly still pissed at UCLA for sticking it to Cal, although Cal really stuck it to themselves.
From an AD administrative perspective, the timing always sucked for Jarmond, with COVID and the Under Armor debacle putting the budget so deep in the red.
If Chip was actually looking to take the Cincinnati job over a year ago, then it's clear to me Jarmond let him know he was on a very short leash, and would be gone as soon as possible.
Sure, it sucks for now, but the alternative of another season with Chip, delaying a rebuild that had to happen, was just going to be more sunk cost.
Short of going back in time and never hiring Kelly in the first place, this may be the best of all possible worlds.
