Do you remember our hoops search? Barnes and Dixon both wanted to come but Tenn and TCU refused to negotiate wrt to the amounts. Remeber Orgeron? fisher? Rich Rod? DeBoer? Alford (2x)?
Now you can negotiate the amount down, but nobody is obligated to accept less.
Barring a monster surprise the 6mm or whatever it would have cost to terminate Chip would have been a long term savings. The pool of candidates to replace him is so small, the chances of making an error is large. Even if you can hire someone staffing is problematic.
