I think the thing I like most about the Lane Kiffen hire is the amount of outrage that has been caused by that. Whether I like Lane or not is pretty irrelevant, but I do think he's earned the opportunity to be a HC at a major program like LSU. I'm surprised that anybody at Ole Miss really thought he'd stay forever there. Plus, I'm sure Kiffen wanted to coach thru the CFP, but I also understand why Ole Miss is saying no.
The beauty of the whole situation is I think it is really exposing that CFB really does have a major problem that better get solved. Apparently, that is going to take Congress to step in to solve because the NCAA doesn't have much power anymore. The money is just the result of it all and looks like LSU is going to have more NIL money than anyone else can get in the foreseeable future.
There just really seems to be a laundry list of issues that need to be solved including Transfer Portal, when a coach can be hired, when the recruiting period starts and ends, when the transfer portal is available, if there should be caps on NIL, amongst many other things. Quite honestly, I think even Lane Kiffen came out on record and said much of this needs to be addressed, so I think it's actually hard to fault him for working in the system as it is now. Personally, I don't think you can use the NFL as a model, because it is a dramatically different system.
Even with Ucla, I realize that the likelihood of really being competitive at a top level is probably not going to happen as things are right now. I personally love the hire if it's actually happening, but I still am not sure how Ucla is in the same ballpark with Ohio St, Mich, $c, and some others regarding NIL. Hopefully can make some kind of dent, but I'm just hoping for competitive football right now.
The thing I do like about CFB right now, is at least I'm starting to see some variation in who the top contenders are. I do think there are major problems that need to be fixed or ironed out that won't jeopardize having parity that I'd still like to see more of.
