1. In the first quarter, the thing that surprised me most was the speed of our so-called "skill players" (I actually detest that term, as ALL players have and need skill to play well.) I don't recall seeing that kind of speed in a Bruin uniform in a long time
2. Penalties, penalties, penalties. Yes, it was just Game 1, but every time I saw there was a flag I cringed, knowing our long history of killer penalties. We came out okay last night, but obviously that issue needs work and a lot of improvement
3. I was thrilled to hear so many UCLA fans cheering our team in the Bezerkelyers' stadium. Even the not-yet-started-school band had a presence there!
4. The team genuinely looked like they were having fun. That's nice to see, versus the moping we're so used to from them
5. Coach Chesney was so engaged! He didn't just stand there, making a few comments on his headset and taking notes on what he'll talk to the team about during halftime or during the coming week
6. It was, frankly, odd NOT to see Jerry Neuheisel on the sideline. I always liked how engaged HE was with the players througout our games. I hope whatever he's doing now will give him the breadth of experience his coaching career will need
7. 1-0, baby! GO BRUINS!!!!!!!!!!!!
