The 2019 and 2020 classes were well below par. In fact, the 2019 class was downright pitiful. The 2021 and 2022 classes were not good with regard to high school recruits but were buoyed by transfers. Chip's big issue was always poor high school recruiting, and that's 80% of your team according to recent FBS stats.

By way of comparison, Mora's first 5 classes had like a top 14 average. Neuheisel's first 3 classes were like top 12. Their recruiting declined as things went south, but Chip's was never anywhere north to begin with.

In any event, there's no evidence to support your belief that Jarmond came along and somehow clipped Chip's recruiting. Chip's recruiting was poor well before Jarmond, and well before NIL.

Chip failed at UCLA in those first few years. Failed to use his buzz to create excitement and boost recruiting. And was not nearly a good enough coach to overcome it, I think much to his surprise. So yeah Chip was lazy, arrogant, and just averse to selling people on anything. You could say his staff didn't help, but he's the one who hired them.
