It was announced on March 3, 2023 that Jarmond extended Chip though 2027. The two-year extension paid Chip $6.1 million during the 2023 and 2024 seasons before getting bumped up to $6.2 million per season in 2025, 2026 and 2027. Kelly's buyout, according to the Times, is $8.5 million if he's dismissed before December 2023 and $4.27 million if he is fired before December 2024. The university wouldn't owe him anything in December 2025.
Many here think Jarmond wanted to fire Chip. How does that make sense. Before this extension, his buyout was ZERO on December of 2023.
So what happened in less than 9 months? this was clearly a Chip decision and he hated it so much he left 1ty least 10.4 million on the table...and someone paid UCLA 1.5MM to leave.
JArmond didnt have a master plan, he fcuked himself by extending him...Chip already had a contract through 2025 with no buyout. The extension was unnecessary and only hamstung UCLA. Why, bc we wanted to be hamstrung. We did not want him to leave.
Chips wandering eyes came as a surprise adn we had NO plan bc we didnt want to pay him 8.5 or 4.2MM bc Jarmond was so f'n stupid to extend him.
