.... college athletes receive intensive, I mean intensive, vocational training. Take a football player. What value does one place, just on: having a small group coach, that provides instruction on how to improve his skill level; Being able to work on that skill level with and against other similarly situated trainees on an almost daily basis in the season and pre-season; being able to scrimmage (role play) those skills through out the week; having a semi-private coach review film , evaluate their progress, and provide constant feedback; and, if they are progressing well, being able to showcase their skills for potential employers 12, 13, maybe 14 times/year against trainees from another program; being afforded world class physical training facilities, with a personalized training plan; being provided a personalized nutrition plan (not even counting the cost of the food).
If you wanted to set up something like that, independent of a university, how much would it cost you per year? If you divided Chip Kelly's salary ($6m) by 85 scholarship athletes, that's $70K, per year. That's just the tip of the iceberg.
I've had this conversation before, and someone said that training at work is not a taxable event. We'll see how it plays out.
