Is the reason I’ve always believed the athletes should NOT be paid. They were already being compensated — A LOT. It was just in-kind stuff — admission to school, books, room, board (not normal crapnfood either), training, first choice of classes, tutors, tuition (which is 80k/yr at certain schools) and dozens of other things. Although, I never thought they were taxable.

Unfortunately, I lost that war. Now, to achieve the best outcome (IMO) the limitations need to be collectively bargained (the courts are going to mandate if it doesn’t happen (read Kavanaugh)) so as to provide a REAL, enforceable rule based structure that both protects the athletes and universities.

There will be certain schools that drop football or play a completely different type of football than Bama, sc, Ohio state, Michigan et al will be playing. I think Stanford is going to make that determination. Northwestern said they would too when their athletes thought about unionizing a few years back.
