... doing it without Kemp for the past few days (at home, anyway). Also, without Uribe, without Rivera, without Hairston, and with their opening day closer relegated to mop-up duty.

Abreu has been a key component, and arrived at exactly the right time. Gwynn is also stepping it up, with his bases clearing triple and gunning of a man at the plate from center last night as examples.

This is a real team effort. Ethier stepped it up last night with a huge blast, in Kemp's absence. The Elli have been pitching in quite well. Gordon is improving defensively I believe, but needs to start hitting more consistently. Loney is still Loney, with the ups and downs he brings mentally.

And... what a starting 5 - the best in baseball right now, possibly (if you go that deep). Jansen is going well enough early on as the new closer, and Lindblom seems to be the real deal.

It's a long season. Let's get Kemp back and take our chances.
