Are you assuming he was that good from day one?
He didn't play as a true freshman walk-on which is expected. But in his RS frosh and soph seasons he played in every game at LB and special teams. He was playing behind some pretty good players those seasons, Latu, Medrano, Vaughns and Muasau. He had plenty of chances to show what he could do those years.
You can't assume anything about Chesney. He probably would have recruited transfers to play over him.
