IF it is relevant now. Why?
Because the NIL collective method of paying players is a stepping stone to player unionization and collective bargaining. NIL collective is unsustainable. In the end, it will be schools paying players and donors paying schools. The field you play on will be the last in a long list of priorities.
What do pro free agents care about? My perception, in order:
Money
Money
Money
Depth chart position (highly correlated with money)
Scheme/fit (for those positions where it matters)
Coach
Successful team
Taxes
Quality/safety of playing surface
Weather at home stadium
Amenities at game stadium

Really interesting podcast series on Freakonomics radio about the football world and the economics of college and pro. There question was whether the nfl and college could merge to create a relegation system like European soccer. Conclusion was there wasn’t enough profit improvement for the nfl owners to go for it, but some interesting discussion about the conversion of college from amateur to professional
