you build a successful team and program from the lines backward. Both sides of the ball. But then suppose someone dangles before you the chance to land a potentially top level quarterback. Really really hard to resist that temptation. So you spend much of the funds you have available to land yourself a name quarterback. Oh joy! But the rest of your now significantly diminished funds must now go for everyone else on your 85-105 member roster.
So we have a team consisting of a highly touted but still very young QB with a terrific arm, a good brain capable of mastering game theory and game plans and not so much yet in the way of accuracy. And 84-104 other bargain basement elements. Bargain basement does not trump top drawer talent. And baby linemen, both O and D, rarely trump experienced and strong and older and well conditioned opponents.
If it's going to happen at all, it's going to take awhile for even a really good and experienced OL coach to (or DL coach) to get our current lines playing at a reasonably high level of their ultimate potentials. And if every play when we're on defense begins with the offense already three yards downfield against us and every offensive play begins with opponents unblocked - well, it figures to be a long season
