the school supports is good for the students. There is pretty much nothing inherent in the college experience for students to bond over other than school pride. If the school is trying to be competitive in sports, and succeeding with some regularity, it's good for the students' mental health. They've got something in common with their peers. A fundamental common interest. That can translate to a better network to connect with in their careers, and more giving to the school as they start to make money.

And, in U.S. college society, the biggest focus is football. UCLA ignores this, to its detriment. I know people that were UCLA undergrads that went to sc for grad school and are more supportive of sc than UCLA. sc sells that "sc community."

As I've said, I like "books and ball." But, I want them to also emphasize winning and creating school spirit and a great fan experience.
