We won three games in football last year, for our third losing season in a row. Over/Under on wins this year will probably be about 5.5. In basketball, we hired someone who was probably no higher than sixth choice, who has made one Sweet 16 in his thirteen-year career, and who had never been offered another major college job while at Cincinnati. He plays a style which will only be acceptable if he wins an immense amount of games. Guerrero had complained about Howland's style when he replaced him, said fans do not want to see scores in the 50's, and now just hired a coach who will provide just that.
I don't blame Chip Kelly for our current status in football, but it has occurred under Guerrero, due to his many poor previous hires. Except for one season two years ago, we have scarcely been nationally relevant in basketball for the last ten years, and are not too likely to be so in the future. Guerrero, like the AD before him, is buffered by UCLA's success in minor sports, which has accounted for all but one of our national titles in the last 40 years. If ADs are judged, as they should be, on quality of hires, and success in the two major sports, he has pretty much been an abysmal failure. If Cronin somehow wins a title here, Guerrero will get credit for hiring him. But the more likely result is that they will not, and maybe not even come close, thus rounding off DG's tenure, from Dorrell to Cronin, as our least successful era in the major sports, since the 1930's. The one hope is Kelly, who had excellent credentials when hired. But I wonder what DG had to do with that hire.
