I hope it really is what Fuzzy described, and what the team seemed to believe was the reason for the loss—that they just came out flat.
My concern is that it might run deeper than that. For all our skill, basketball IQ, and size, we just aren’t a particularly quick team. Rice has true burst and Gabby holds her own, but outside of those two, there’s a noticeable lack of elite foot speed. It doesn’t typically show up unless we’re facing top-tier athletes, like JuJu last year, or what UCONN did to us. I thought I saw some of the same issues surface against Texas.
I do think there are ways to mitigate it, but I’m not sure those solutions align with what we’re trying to do this season, especially with the emphasis on pushing the ball. If we get into track meets with certain teams, I think we’re vulnerable.
