Whether it's a big man about to challenge a penetration or a tightly guarding defender, the floater tends to catch the defense off balance at that moment where they are about to act. It tends to surprise the opponents' defense a bit, changes the rhythm of anticipation, and perhaps catches the defense a bit unprepared to act. In essence it's a way to get a shot off quicker than pulling up, gathering one's self and then elevating for a shot. Even though the percentage rate for a floater might be less than a more conventional jump shot, I do believe it has its place. Also, because most of the time a floater is shot while moving toward the basket, the shooter can enhance his chances of making the shot, IMO, by practicing the shot off the glass instead of trying to swish it in. Most shooters don't do that and I believe that makes the shot less likely to go in.
