I didn’t watch the entire video, but about a third of the way in he made a point that I'll elaborate on. He said he’d play devil’s advocate and explain why, for a select group of players, that shot can actually be a good option. I agree with that. The floater is a feel-based shot, kind of like distance control in putting for golf (at least for me.) It’s not something most players drill nearly as much as a jump shot, so the skill gap can be huge. A lot of guys end up taking it out of desperation, while others intentionally hunt it.

I’ll take Curry shooting a floater every time, even though he probably shoots a higher percentage on his jumper. In Dent’s case, he doesn’t have great explosiveness at the rim, we’ve seen how often he gets blocked. At the same time, he gets into the paint with ease. For him, the floater might actually be a good shot. He’s just missing it right now for the same reason he’s missing everything else: confidence.

I thought the example of Brunson was telling. In his last two years of college, he shot nearly 60% on floaters. We’d gladly take that from Dent.
