outside of the context of being a FB coach. That's what he is; it's what he's good at. He wasn't going to start a children's hospital or found a Fortune 500 company.
Two things can be true at the same time. Saban chased the paycheck like everyone else, and he had a way of doing things (values, culture, skill, whatever you want to call it) that was important to him and that made him successful.
What I find kind of corny is that these coaches use terms like "values" like they're somehow better from a character standpoint than everybody else. I doubt it. Plenty of teams are out there working hard, creating strong cultures, etc.
More than some abstract idea of "values", Saban was just a great coach. He demanded a lot of his players and coaches, he adapted with the game when necessary, and he worked hard to get good players. I don't think his edge was in "values", but rather that he was just better at his job than everyone else.
