The comparison is the bizarre desire to bring back players as coaches just because they were good players. The degree can vary I suppose depending on the position. But, we just made a position coach not on anyone's hot board for much of anything the HC, so you may get your wish. The standards are pretty low.
By "wanting" to coach, I mean a demonstrated desire to coach, not merely saying "yes" when offered a job. If Perkins has the desire to coach, chances are he is coaching somewhere already. Do you know if that's the case? If you told me he was coaching at some AZ JC, it would seem less weird. Otherwise, it's a stab in the dark.
Coaching is hard work, and entails a lot of recruiting. Just being a former player who people remember fondly doesn't really count for anything at all. Don't we have enough of that already with Foster, Jerry Neuheisel, etc.?
