Right now, there is nothing positive I can say about him and any character. He wasn't being fired or close to it and had an obligation under CONTRACT to his coaching staff and players. If he wanted out, he should have left in November or December and given Ucla a chance to do a legitimate search and possibly do some recruiting where Kelly neglected that part of his duty.
But since he decided to leave at this time of year is one of the more f'ed up things I've seen a HC do to ANY program. If it was health reasons, it would be understandable. Regardless of how Ucla handles sports and/or football is not relative to the timing of him leaving. By all accounts, half of this team could have easily entered the portal and coaches looked for other work based on Kelly's move. It is nothing short of SEVERE damage control just to get a HC to salvage the existing staff and players to even have a program next year.
