As a guy that has the utmost respect for CDF, on paper this could be the worst hire by a Power 5 (or the pre-Power 5 equivalent) school since Gerry Faust.
What school has elevated a position coach to HFC?
What the heck is going on? Did Chip poison the UCLA brand so badly that nobody, that's nobody, will come here?
Did Jarmond try to low ball all the candidates?
Does Jarmond think DF is the best available candidate for the money we have?
I will repeat my conspiratorial take that I alluded to the other day. If you hire a guy that is so far from qualified, especially if he's a UCLA guy, you're doing that so that you have control over the guy. I think the bizarre approach that Chip took was largely forced upon him. Imo, CDF was hired because this is probably a huge pay raise. If he gets fired and bought out, he has a giant nest egg. If he succeeds, great! If I were him, and was a person that is tough-minded, immune to criticism, then taking the job is a no-brainer. But, I think he was hired because he agreed to continue "books and ball." Iow, I don't expect the recruiting pool or approach to change significantly.
I would have taken anyone I listed, including the MAC guys, the Memphis guy, over CDF. And, saying that is not an insult to CDF - those guys are proven, D1 coaches. That we should easily have been able to hire. Let alone, at least picking up the phone to try likely home runs, or at least triples, Liepold and Klieman.
There is something super wrong in Westwood.
That said, DF was a great football player. He's been a great running backs coach for us (Charbs, Kelley, and yes! Perkins). I will be cheering for him.
But, sheesh ....
