. . . (whatever the sport), the wild card doesn't really go to the "best" of the non-division winners, but to the second-best team in the weakest division. Because some divisions are weaker than others, "best record" doesn't necessarily mean "best".
Obviously, very difficult to prove this--short of having a playoff among the contenders for the wild card. It comes down to a matter of opinion.
