That was the name.

And it took place, mostly, on a Navaho(?) reservation.

the two things about Billy Jack that merit historical mention are:

1) It was the first Hollywood film to have a real martial arts fight. Yup, predates the Kung fun movie invasion. It actually might have invited it. I was there at the theater and people loved watching Billy Jack kick that guy in the face. One of my fellow ushers, who I am still friends with, still to this day erroneously recall kicking each other in the face after a run.

2) Nobody wanted to take a chance on some hippie loving green beret that knew martial arts and was not afraid to use it. Kick the other Cheek. So, the star Tom Mclaughin, four walled the theaters where it played (he rented the theater) and kept just about all the money to himself on that first film (I think there were 2 more)
