Actually the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor did not cause the US to enter the war against Germany. The US initially declared war on Japan only.
It was Hitler himself who caused us to enter the war against Germany, by having Germany declare war on the US. It was only after Germany’s declaration of war that the US reciprocated by declaring war on Germany on December 11, 4 days after Pearl Harbor.
Hitler was under no obligation to Japan to declare war. The Axis pact only required aid if one of the three signatories was attacked, not if they initiated hostilities. Hitler wanted the war, he thought he could finish off Russia and that war with the US was inevitable.
Of course Republicans/America First fascists did not want to fight Germany, but Germany’s declaration of war against the US ended that opposition.
