Roman emperors built triumphal arches to celebrate victories abroad and parade the defeated; in France, two centuries ago, Napoleon marked his birthday by laying the foundation stone of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Now Donald Trump wants one of his own as well. It will be the “Arc de Trump,” the press quips. But most importantly, the Arc apparently has become crucial for America.

Health insurance premiums are about to rise sharply for more than 20 million Americans, and the cost of living remains painfully high, yet on Sunday, at a pre-Christmas party at the White House, the president pointed to the new construction project in Washington – first talked about in October – as a domestic policy priority. Trump revealed in fact that in charge of the project is Vince Haley, a former Trump speechwriter and longtime collaborator of Newt Gingrich, now head of the Domestic Policy Council.
