. . . betting proposition. The question was what a reasonable expectation would be. What benchmark should be used to assess Bob Chesney's first year?I
For a coach that has never coached at this level. For a program that has cratered. Where the outstanding recruiting class he's putting together won't be here for another year, and many may redshirt.
My position is not that Chesney is a terrible coach; he's obviously a good one. I think he'll have us complete we ting with the best in our conference . . . eventually.
He appears to be doing the right things, but he's taking over a dumpster fire. Let's give a little respect to the difficult job he's taken on.
Suppose he does go 5-7? Do you fire him and start looking for yet another coach? Or are you going to say hold-on. This is still a great coach. He's changed the culture. He's ramped up the energy. We've won two more games than last year. We'll have a great recruiting class coming in next year. He's turned the ship.
Because if you say the latter, after a 5-7 season, then you will be saying what I'm saying now, that 5-7 was a reasonable expectation and DOESN'T cancel our future.
It all comes down to what kind of fan you want to be. I know what kind of fan I want to be.
I am not placing a cap on what Chesney may achieve. I'll be as thrilled as anyone if he pulls down 8 wins.
