Sure, I can see going to a donor and saying "Look, we need you to donate $5 mil a year for six years to underwrite the changes we're going to make to raise this program to an elite level." That calls for high giving for a limited time.

But it's another thing entirely to ask for $5mil a year in perpetuity PLUS a $60 mil bequest in their will.

At some point, folks are going to say I'd rather have a Matisse, a Lamborghini, and a vacation home in Martha's Vineyard.
