The committee clearly favors good wins vs bad losses.
Main factors: number of losses with a decent sos. Doesn’t have to be a great sos, just a decent one. Good wins.
Losses in conference championship doesn’t affect at large status if you play in the SEC or Big 10. In the others it depends on who you lose to.
Alabama had two losses to bad teams and got in because they beat Georgia early in the season.
Texas is out because they lost 2 games in conference and you can’t fit 5 sec teams in the playoffs. IF they beat OSU they might have a case vs Alabama, but it wasn’t that loss that doomed them. It was the Florida loss.
Miami is in because they are an ACC team, not because they beat ND by a last second field goal at home. If Virginia won, they would have used the excuse that the home win Miami was essentially a tie because of home field advantage.
Networks want ND over Miami but no way could the committee shut out ACC.
Politics trumps everything.
