Maybe set up a tier system inside conferences: promotion and relegation. Shrink the number of teams that are in the pool, and have every conference play round robin inside top tier, pick top two teams. Maybe divide each top tier into two and create divisions, whose leaders play one another for the conference championship., Then throw those two teams into some kind of playoff.
Sure, there will be some weak teams in every playoff field, That's why you rank them 1 through 8 and have them pair up accordingly.
This really is not rocker science. It's just that we don'yt have the will tio fix this sh*t becauase we *like* the fact that tehre is a controversy at the end of every season. NCAA thinks it's good for the sport that there is always some controversy at the end of every season.
