There is such a massive difference in strength of schedule, that you cannot use the kind of criteria that pro sports uses.
As for computer rankings, 12 data points aren't really enough to comclude anything, particularly on the margins, where you are trying to decide between two teams that are "close".
Frankly, I don't think there are more than 5 or 6 teams good enough to win the championship, so all the angst about the 10th team doesn't really matter. Maybe we will see a double-digit seed win the CFP, but I don't think it is likely.
The situation is the same in college hoops. In the last 20 years, every national champion has been in the top 12 of the AP poll in week 6 of the season. That's the poll that just came out. The other 56 teams provide good TV, but they tend to be extreme long shots.
