UCLA Football - We Have Other Priorities
I do agree that UCLA should not break the bank to hire the next coach. We should have done that in 2002 or 2007, or 2011.
I expect UCLA will be willing to pay somewhere between what Chip made ($6+ million) and somewhere substantially south of $10 million. For that kind of money I don't see us getting much more than a PF Fleck, Jonathan Smith, or Dave Aranda-type: an established but unexciting Power 4 coach. Those guys aren't worth that kind of money and are certainly not worth the buyouts those big contracts would come with. UCLA already has to pay Foster like $10 million so he could dress up like a head coach for a few months.
I'd go for an up and coming guy we can get for a lot less, and with a manageable buyout for if/when he fails (which, if we're being honest, will probably happen).
I don't think a top FBS coordinator or lower FBS head coach is much more of a risk than the type of guys I mentioned above. And they potentially come with a greater ceiling and definitely less financial risk.
