The use of NIL beyond the $20.5 million limit will be regulated. All transactions above $600 have to be reported and go through a clearinghouse. Thus the phony NIL won't be as plentiful. And I believe UCLA has committed to spending the limit.
We won't be on a level field with the powerhouses due to under the table stuff and less prioritization on football, but we will be much, much closer than we have been under the current system. Right now our budget for players is probably less than 25% of the top schools. Under the new system we may be closer to 75%.
That's true about basketball. It's easier to support. And UCLA will probably spread some of the money around needlessly to non-revenue sports. But the % of alumni interested in basketball is pretty small, and not getting any bigger. I bet 80% of fans would prefer a CFB playoff berth to a Final 4.
We're in the B1G because of football. I'd prefer we spend the money there. I think may consider college basketball to be relatively small potatoes.
Having said that, UCLA will spend money there and on the women, so FB will have to make do. But we will still be better off than under the current free-for-all system. As it stands now, we are pretty much out of the mix completely.
