Just to be clear, I didn't mean to impugn you or your post. To the contrary, I take what you say as an accurate rendition of what you've heard.

What I mean to convey is that your source within the Ohio St. AD would probably not know what, if anything, was said between Chip and the UCLA AD. They are likely just repeating or interpreting information they got from Chip or his agent (or, less likely, Martin Jarmond). I would not consider Chip a reliable narrator because he has an interest in presenting himself in the best light possible to potential employers.

I would guess that Sehorn has the right angle on this: that this story is an interpretation or spinoff of the D'Anton Lynn departure. I.e., that Chip told the AD we needed to keep Lynn on board and that we should match USC's offer, and the AD said, No. And now he is spinning this as the "proposal" you have heard about.

No one here knows what will happen. But from a UCLA fan's perspective, the important takeaways from what we're hearing are that 1) Chip is trying hard to get another job, and 2) he's willing to cast the blame on UCLA for his crappy performance here.

As far as taking a pay cut, I believe he would. Chip is getting fired from UCLA in a year anyway. At Ohio St., he wouldn't have to do the things he hates most (recruit, fundraise, form relationships with boosters/administrators, etc.) He would be free to do what he likes (call plays, design schemes). And he would have good players and walk right into a situation where he can win big right away. Then he can try to parlay his success into a job in the NFL, which is where he really wants to be. But he knows he's done as a head coach at UCLA, and thus this job is a dead end for him.
