I can only think of one sport, that both genders play similarly, that the women's version is more popular and that's figure skating. The Ladies figure skating is more popular than men's, but figure skating, outside of Russia, is a "mid major", if I can use that phrase, revenue generating pro sport. It's relatively small time compared to football, soccer, basketball and baseball.
So given the fact that men's sports programs generate much more revenue, it's not surprising that a successful LSU women's basketball program still lost money.
