don't matter because Chip is such a genius at identifying overlooked players, and especially transfers, that fit perfectly into his program.
And I don't think anyone here ever complained that Chip isn't a "great" recruiter; more that he doesn't recruit at all. It's not a cult of personality. With Chip, it's a cult of apathy.
But even if your hypothesis was correct, and recruiting success evolves singularly to sums of sacks of simoleons, the premise that this renders the coach immaterial seems provably false in that the quality of the coaching becomes the only variable controllable by the school/athletic department -- pretty much exactly as it is today.
And pretty much the Critical Success Factor (CSF) Chip has proven himself to be sorely lacking.
