Ed O and attorneys awarded $40+ million in legal fees from the NCAA.
Northwestern football follows up trying to classify athletes as employees and unionize.
NCAA allows additional thousands in per year compensation.
California passes pay to play act, signed by our kalimony governor, effectively regulating the NCAA on their stance on amateurism and supporting athletes participating in NIL.
Other states follow the act.

I'm sure I'm missing other key events in that sequence, but the Ed O case appears to be what put the gears in motion to shift the paradigm, after decades, in student athlete support.
