In my opinion, Cronin's first sentence in response was okay. "I don't give a rat's ass about the Michigan State student section." But that's where he should have left it. Cronin escalated the situation by turning to the reporter and making his snide comment giving the reporter "a kudos" for asking the dumbest question, and then followed with the rest. Cronin was in the wrong.
That said, I don't think the reporter is absolved from all responsibility. He should have recognized the mood that Cronin was in after his team got shellacked in two games on a difficult road trip, and not said anything more about the MSU students after Cronin's initial response.
