I also hope Mick Cronin apologizes to Steven. He’s really the one person who deserves it. It’s interesting how many sports writers seem more upset about how the reporter was treated. I get it—that’s their profession, and it’s easy for them to put themselves in that position. Still, while I don’t condone any of it, I’m much more bothered by how the player was treated and what the ripple effects could be, especially when it comes to recruiting and how players and families view the program.
There’s also been a lot of talk that this one incident could be enough to void his contract for cause. I’m not sure that happens based on this alone, unless UCLA has already been documenting concerns and laying the groundwork behind the scenes. My sense is that it hasn’t happened—but at this point, it probably should. This serves several purposes. First, it gives Cronin an opportunity to reflect and hopefully make meaningful changes in how he handles situations like this. Second, it begins to establish a record in case issues arise again in the future. And third, it may ultimately lead him to recognize that this might not be the right long-term fit anymore, and that it could be time to consider another opportunity if things don’t evolve.
