… the games, or portion of games, in which we are outplaying our opponent. Some may suggest there aren’t many, but I’m not talking consistency here, I’m talking potential.

I once implemented a new support system at work, and the Help Desk director claimed that the system was poor. I spent a week trying to support her issues, and couldn’t see anything myself, but she was adamant, claiming that her staff was taking twice as long to support a call, due to the new system.

I finally asked her to give me the person by person statistics she was using to claim this. When I reviewed what she gave me, of the 6 people, 5 were taking longer (some twice as long) but one person was taking almost 50% of the time they used to.

I concluded that if it were the system, how could that one person be improving their time. I suggested that the issue was training, and not the system.

I see a parallel. If we were getting blown out in all of our games, that would be one thing. But we are not. There are other factors at work here other than recruiting talent. I’ll let other “experts” debate what those other factors might be.
