A couple of things up front. I don’t follow recruiting as closely as I used to, and I know very little about other teams’ recruiting classes, so I’m really just speaking from what I see when I watch games. I couldn’t tell you whether these guys are five-stars or four-stars. That said, this season players like Boozer (Duke), Dybantsa (BYU), Peterson (Kansas), Peat (Arizona), and Fleming (Houston) have been among the best players in college basketball. They’re primary pieces for their teams, and without them, those teams would look very different.
I understand that this year is somewhat of an anomaly and is being labeled one of the strongest recruiting classes ever. Still, I think your point is really about five-star talent. My argument isn’t that Cronin needs to consistently land five-star players—though having one here and there would certainly help—but rather that he isn’t bringing in high school recruits at all.
In my opinion, you can’t realistically rebuild an entirely new roster every year. Next season, it looks like he’ll have some pieces to build around, but what happens the year after that? That’s where my concern really lies.
