I do believe we’ll continue to see improvement from Dent, both offensively and defensively. We saw flashes of what you’re describing in the Gonzaga game, where he finished with 10 assists, three blocks, and two steals. What stood out to me in the ASU game was his willingness to look for his own shot. If teams start playing him strictly to pass rather than score, assists will be harder to come by, so I liked seeing him be more aggressive offensively. The numbers may not fully reflect it, but I think we’ll be better off in the long run because of that mindset.
Honestly, I think Dent has done a solid job as a passer all along. Too often his teammates haven’t been ready for the ball, leading to fumbled passes. That should improve as the season goes on and the group gets more comfortable playing with him. That said, he can still be careless at times, almost nonchalant, with some of his passes. Those are especially concerning because they often turn into run-outs and easy points, which we saw a couple of times against ASU. There’s a big difference between trying to thread a pass to an open teammate and throwing a lazy pass from the backcourt to the foul line. My guess is Cronin will be in his ear about cleaning that up.
I think there's reason to be optimistic about Dent.
