if Mark Walter/Guggenheim Partners are parking $10B in the Lakers, it's going to be a good investment. Even at 3% appreciated value per annum, that's $300 million more than the appreciation on your house.
Plus, your concerns about the NBA are short-term. The new owners likely have a plan to improve operations & profitability. And...to use jaded jargon that you might understand...make the "pie bigger" as they did with the Dodgers.
My guess is they will privately fund an arena at the center of brand new real estate development. The Buss family has been renting all these years and definitely don't have the financial resources to do anything ambitious.
The privately-funded model flies in the face of the general NBA bullying cities & states approach for publicly-financed venues...which directly led to the Sonics moving to OKC. But it's been proven to be a tremendous success for both the team & city by the SF Giants. And subsequently by the GS Warriors, LA Rams, LA Clippers.
Walter/Guggenheim Partners own Dodger Stadium so this may even be a move towards actually re-developing that concrete nightmare at Chavez Ravine. Build a new arena, install public transportation, develop the surrounding property with homes & businesses.
Wild, I know...but, frankly, the meaning of this $10B transaction is well beyond your comprehension.
