the encampments when the counter-protestors attacked Tuesday night. It is also a common refrain used against any youthful protest. It says "look at me. I am a grown person with responsibilities that I can't turn away from, so I've withdrawn from the business of the right and wrong and capitulated to the order of things, because I have too much at stake and seeing you act by your conscience bothers me at a profound level, so I would like you to capitulate as well and stop making me feel bad".
Or maybe I am projecting my own feelings of guilt and a lifetime of not having committed my life to any higher cause. I don't know. All I know is, (a) I caught myself thinking something along those lines in the '90s ad was horrified, and (b) consequently, that phrase really irks me.
