laws dictate, the bit about making it against the law to wear religious signifiers. They enacted that law primarily against hijab but being French and high-minded, decided that they should not single out muslims, because Liberté, égalité, fraternité, and all that, so they threw wearing a cross or a yarmulke under the same bus.

Yay, Liberté!

(I wonder if liberté, égalité and fraternité are like those triplets that you can only get two out of three but not all three, like cheap, fast, and good. Need to think about that.)
