I'm not a particularly religious person (I'm a lapsed Catholic), and don't usually go out of my way to run interference for organized religion, but the vast majority of practicing believers aren't holy warriors seeking to either oppress or proselytize you. For most, wearing a cross, yarmulke or hijab isn't seen as an opportunity to offend you, but an expression of their own personal faith.
