Recent data show that about 7% of global oil output (around 7.4 million barrels per day in June 2026) transits Bab al-Mandeb.
This is roughly 10–12% of global maritime trade overall. The strait is a critical alternative route for Gulf oil exports, especially after Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has forced Saudi Arabia and other Gulf producers to reroute large volumes through Yanbu and then south via Bab al-Mandeb
