The GREAT
Running for 279 yds
Getting Sacks and Pressure which led directory to all 3 Cal turnovers. Yeah, we mostly had to blitz to get pressure, but we could get home. Did get some pressure with just 4 (Gobeira and West stood out)
Sammy O and Jalen Woods flying around on defense
James' 2 picks after coming in for Johnson.
The good
We were pretty strong against the run. Cal was pretty determined, especially in the 2nd half, and we hung in there. You can win a lot of games if you can just run the ball and stop the run
Nico was solid. 1 major mistake, but given that he's in his 4th different offensive system in just 3 years, I expect growth. We didn't have to burn any timeouts because he was in the wrong play, or the play didn't get in, etc. I expect growth, but still some accuracy/touch issues.
Special Teams - no major game one issues anywhere makes this a good (and Knight had some solid returns). See the Colorado-GT game 1 Thursday - false starts on extra points, ko return td, multiple blocked kicks, bad snaps, etc.
The Bad
3rd down defense. Cal was 11/16 until we put the game away. Sometimes that was penalties making it easy, sometimes it was JKS making a great play, but it needs to improve.
The Ugly
The Penalties, especially mental ones (multiple 12 men on the field, the personal foul on Robell, a couple of false starts)
Lovett's end of the half drive (argh. You can do better kid)
