They play their home games at whatever Heinz Field is called now. Not sure how it impacts school spirit exactly, but the Pitt campus is absolutely dead on Saturdays in the fall. For non-students/alums Pitt does have the advantage of being easily the biggest show in town, not a lot of enthusiasm for Duquesne or Robert Morris.

Unless things have changed very recently UCLA does have free buses for students to the Rose Bowl. I'm sure single game tickets are available but most attending would have season tickets which are combined with basketball (season tickets may also be required to claim a seat for the USC game). There's no tailgating arrangements for students, and queueing up for the buses on Bruin Walk isn't very exciting either. As far as spontaneously going to games, the out of sight out of mind factor has always seemed like a major hurdle.
