My guess is that it's being driven by "advocacy groups" on behalf of the players that don't actually have the players' best interests in mind. Their interest is keeping their charitable organization involved in something so that they can continue to receive donations and pay their own salary. They don't care if there may be negative consequences for the players if they are determined to be employees. Just a guess.
