He's at a point in life where he just wants to win the big one, either at the nfl or cfb level. That will complete his legacy. He wants to be more than Don Coryell.
Money doesn't mean much to him. He's made tons of money. He doesn't have any kids, much less grand kids. His wife is set, if he were to die tomorrow, like his friend Bill McGovern did.
The spin that chip took a "demotion" is off-base, imo. He went from a pretender to a contender. That's a promotion. Going from nothing to something is always good.
There's the old joke about the 4 rules of dating. Chip ran straight into rule #4 when the hc job metastasized into nil fundraising. "Every morning, you have to look yourself in the mirror and ask yourself...'is the fvcking I'm getting worth the fvcking I'm getting?'"
And chip decided the answer was no. Chip told Ucla what he needed to make the program a contender. Ucla said no. So when the answer is no, the only thing to do is move on. She's not gonna change, and you're crazy if you think she will.
